The apartment
The name of the apartment comes from the location of the two buildings, where we are located, in via Porta di Ronca and via Trotula dé Ruggiero.
The area is called PLANUM MONTIS and is on the slopes of Mount Bonadies.
The development of this new district (bordered to the north by Via S. Maria della Consolazione, to the south by Via Tasso, to the east by the valley of Fusandola and to the west by the slopes of S. Maria della Mercede and Montevergine) was mentioned in documents dating back to between IX and X centuries and from the Eleventh century onwards, placing it in the Lombard period.
Guaiferio, Prince of Salerno from 861 to 880, in fact moved his residence to this area, perhaps because it is much more definable than the Curtis Dominica, a flat area and easy to access, closer to the sea, where Arechi II had built his princely palace.
The particular salubriousness of the place, among other things well protected by the outer walls and the castle, persuaded numerous religious orders to settle there, among the first the Benedictines with the convents of S. Lorenzo Martire del Monte, S. Maria Monialium, S. Leone de Foro Muro, San Nicola della Palma, and then with the gradually spreading of mendicant orders the Franciscans also formed a community here in the convent of St. Francis, to which Queen Margherita di Durazzo was a great benefactor. She also enabled the transfer of the convent of St. Nicholas from the Benedictines to the Franciscans.
